Since 1999, played for the reserve of FC Zenit. In 2000, he was included in the Zenit first-team squad , making his debut in a 3-0 away win over English side Bradford City in the Intertoto Cup.
He played in the youth team of Russia. Arshavin debuted for the Russian national team on 17 May 2002 in a match against Belarus. His first goal with the squad came in a friendly match versus Romania on 13 February 2003. Since then, he has managed to score in every competition which Russia has participated in. He was Russia's captain in a Euro 2008 qualifier against Estonia. On the 11th June 2009 Arshavin was made Russia captain full time by manager Guus Hiddink. Top goal-scorer of the 2005 and 2006 season.
In 2004 - 2006 he was the vice-captain, in February-March 2007 - captain.
Repeatedly included in the short list of 33 best players on the version of the RAF: a 1-set in 2005 and 2006, a 2-m - in 2001, 2002 and 2004.
In February 2009 moved to Arsenal.
